My oldest is getting close to her baptism date and so I have been thinking of the ways I want to intentionally help her prep and understand the covenant she is making as she begins a life on the path of Jesus. I am both excited and nervous, this feels like a new chapter in motherhood and I want to make sure they feel the Savior’s love, and their Heavenly Parents’ and earthly parents’ love.
So here are a few things we are doing in our household to help her understand what it means to be baptized in Jesus’ name and what it means to be given the gift of the Holy Ghost.
1. Six-month Count Down Scripture Paper Chain
The first one is a 6-month count down paper chain. I designed these to be able to quickly print them out onto 12 cardstock sheets of paper and cut them into strips. They are stapled together and each day, as you get closer to your baptism date, you tear one off and read the scriptures. My plan is I will look up one in physical scriptures and she will look up the other (giving each of us some more practice finding scriptures in physical books). We will take turns reading our scripture and then we will read the “Truth to Remember” together. This will go on for 60 days and I know this will give us more practice understand scripture language, understanding gospel doctrine, and open up any discussion or questions she may have.

2. Books to Help Children Understand their Baptismal Covenants
Books are such a wonderful way to prep and understand what it means to be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. My kids absolutely love when I read books to them and they grasp certain topics better when introduced in a narrative way. Here are some great books you can use, stories are a wonderful way to teach.
3. Videos about Baptism and Holy Ghost
I mean, I think just as helpful as books are videos. Once a video starts playing, my kids are drawn in like flies to a light and they soak up every second. These are all a hit for my kids!
