Beginner Knitting & Crochet for Kids

Do you have a child who has been wanting to learn how to knit or crochet? It can definitely be intimidating as a parent who does not know how to do either, but hopefully this blog post can help you find a good place to start learning together!

Knitting

Definitely check out this cute reel that I can’t embed, but it is a song you can sing and use to learn how to finger knit!

Beginner Knitting Loom Kit

I introduced this to my 5-year-old son and he got it immediately! I had to start it, which the kit explains what to do and has some good images to follow (online tutorials are also helpful if you need extra help!). And then they just keep wrapping around the circle in the same pattern over and over. I do need to be nearby to help fix any problems where they didn’t quite “flip” the thread correctly but once they get the hang of it they have so much confidence and pride in their work! We bring this to sibling ballet classes, church, it is a great “waiting activity”.

Crochet

Woobles

This is a fun way to get older kids into crocheting, a project they are willing to try hard to make will push themselves to learn! This one is best for ages 12+. I tried with my 7-year-old and it was a bit too much for her to be able to figure out alone, and if you are a parent who doesn’t crochet, you wouldn’t be able to help troubleshoot. But still a great next-step option once they get to that pre-teen age!

Other Fiber

This reel isn’t specifically knitting or crocheting but it is a very simple way to make bracelets that any child who can count to 3 can do! This is my next one to try with my kids over 3, it will be a great option for (like explained in the caption) tumbling or soccer or other sibling’s activities. Anytime you need a craft on-the-go!

Loom Potholder Kit

This is a great beginner kit to gift to any child 5+. It doesn’t involve knitting or crochet and follows the simple weaving pattern that they can figure out pretty quickly. With this kit, the end gets pretty tight and so I usually have to take over the last 1-2 rows and help do the finishing step to get it off the loom. They love the ability to make their own doll/figurine rugs and are excited to show others something they made all by themselves!
